Hearth in Cill Mhuirbhigh

During the course of research excavations in the W half of the inner enclosure at Dún Aonghasa (GA110-039----) two hearths (F218: GA110-039010-) and (F212: GA110-039011-) were revealed to the N of a pit (F234: GA110-039009-). This hearth was defined by a thin spread of heavily charcoal-flecked soil (diam. c. 0.5m) and it was bound on its E side by a flat slab. Small fragments of burnt bone and scallop shell were recovered as well as an unidentifiable charred cereal grain. A scatter of stones to its E may have been the remains of a roughly cobbled surface. A thin spread of limpet shell lay to its NE. The second hearth (GA110-03911-) was revealed 3.4m to the NE of this one (Cotter 2012, vol. 1, 319-20). Two more hearths (GA110-039012- and GA110-039013-) were identified to the S of the pit. All these features date to the Late Bronze Age (ibid., 316).
