What is recorded here
Hartley T. Ferrar was born in Dalkey, County Dublin, in 1879, the son of a bank clerk and a woman named Mary Holmes Hartley. He left Ireland young for South Africa, then England, and eventually the brutal white silence of Antarctica, where he mapped hidden coal and named a glacier before returning to die in New Zealand. Dalkey gave him life; the polar dark gave him legend.
