What is recorded here

Firelight flickered across shallow pits and two hearths south of Tomb 15, where bells-shaped pots and grooved vessels belonged to ordinary life around 2500 BC. People may have sat there after dark, eating, mending, arguing or loving one another while the great tombs watched like stone giants. The dead were not far away; an adult and child lay cremated inside Tomb 15 with a nearly complete Beaker vessel. To live beside such a place was to keep company with memory itself.

Five concentrations of Beaker pottery, part of Eogan’s Phase 5 – Final Neolithic / Beaker complex dating to c. 2500 – c. 2200 BC (Eogan and Cleary 2017, 42) are recorded around Tomb 1C. This is Concentration A, which is just S and SE of Tomb 15 and is associated with shallow pits, post-holes and 2 hearths (Eogan and Roche 1997, 197-203, 223-28). No house plans were discernible but it was a domestic area, although the cremated remains of an adult and child with an almost complete Breaker had been inserted in the passage of Tomb 15 (Eogan 1984, 308-12). Forty six sherds representing about 12 vessels of Bell Beaker form were recorded from the habitation layers. Grooved ware also occurred in this concentration but it is not possible to demonstrate any stratigraphic precedence for either ceramic group.
