Habitation site in Butterfield

Habitation site

What is recorded here

Butterfield holds a rare layer where ordinary life touched death before becoming sacred ground. Excavations in 1997 revealed 12th to 13th century occupation beside a former burial area within an ecclesiastical enclosure. The arrangement suggests people lived close enough to remember the dead, tend the place and shape its meaning.
Excavations in 1997 uncovered evidence for occupation of 12th to 13th century date at a site which was formerly used for burial (DU022-038001-) and within an ecclesiastical enclosure (DU022-038002-) (Carroll 1998, 59-60). Compiled by Geraldine Stout Date of upload: 26th April 2012
