Island was used for biological warfare experiments using anthrax during WWII, and subsequently decontaminated at the end of the '80s.Because of these experiments the island has the informal name (alt-name) "Anthrax Island".
Gruinard Island, located off the northwest coast of Scotland, was used by the British military during World War II for testing anthrax as a biological weapon. The island was later decontaminated in the 1980s and is notable for its role in the history of biological warfare and the environmental challenges of post-war cleanup.
