Graveyard in Kilmurry North (rathdown By.)

Situated on a low knoll on a marked E-facing valley slope. The OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1928, 16) describe a church here with some graves to the E. The only visible internal feature, however, is a stony bank (L 3.5m; Wth 2m; H 0.8m) running NW-SE at the S end of the knoll summit. An oval enclosure (dims. c. 30m NW-SE; c. 20m NE-SW) defined SE-W-N by an earthen bank (Wth 2.5-3.4m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1-1.3m) and by an internal fosse for a short stretch at N (Wth 2m; D 0.6m) surrounds the site, truncated by a modern boundary wall at the NE beyond which is a steep slope. A gap at SSE (Wth 3.5m) is approached by a rough ramp and may be the original entrance. No evidence of grave-markers. A series of test trenches opened in 2007 immediately to the E in advance of the construction of a dwelling (Excavation Licence 07E0441), did not reveal anything of archaeological significance (Nelis 2010, 556) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
