Graveyard in Killeennashask

Graveyard

What is recorded here

Killeennashask is a graveyard hidden beneath dense overgrowth in County Mayo, Ireland. It gave its name to the townland and still holds forgotten graves despite resisting human inspection. The land remembers what maps and men have forgotten.
Although the church, named ‘Killeennashask Church (in Ruins)’, is indicated on the 1838 and 1923 OS 6-inch maps, neither edition shows the graveyard (MA021-067002-). However, O'Donovan (OS Letters 1838, 274) records that 'In Killeenashask (Townland) is another grave yard, called Cillin na Seasc, which gave name to this townland.' Dense overgrowth impeded an inspection in 1995. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 16 November 2017
