Graveyard in Kilcommon More (north)

Graveyard

What is recorded here

Kilcommon graveyard has vanished beneath the ornamental grounds of the Glengall demesne. The dead were dug up when the Swiss cottage was built. What remains is not a grave but a forgotten instruction: beauty can be an act of erasure.
The exact location of Kilcommon church (TS081-059----) or 'Cummian's Church' is unknown. According to Power (1908, 25) 'the site of the early church is within the Glengall demesne and quite close to the Swiss cottage. On the erection of the latter and the laying out of the ornamental grounds which surround it the ancient graveyard was disturbed and the bones of the dead, in many cases, removed'. There is no visible trace of the graveyard above ground. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
