Graveslab in Waterford City

Robert Lincoln. 1630. N. wall of the chancel of the Franciscan church (WA009-005032-). Rectangular limestone slab against the north wall of the chancel. It is very worn and was re-used in the 18th century. The original decoration consisted of a large diamond-headed fleur-de-lys cross enclosed in a circle and set on a rounded calvary flanked by the symbols of the Passion and two coats of arms. The symbols include a sponge, a rod, pincers, three nails, a ladder, hammer, scourges. The pillar with ropes, a cock, the seamless garment and a spear. There is a skull and crossed bones at the base of the calvary. The arms are very worn and the inscription is: HIC JACET ROBERTUS LINCOL/ FILIUS GUILIELMI CIVIS CIVITATIS WATERFORDIAE QUI OBYT 25 JAN/UARY ANNO DOMINI 1630/ ET UXOR EIUS MARGARITA BROWNE QUAE OBIIT..
