Graveslab in Newtown is a worn stone fragment from the medieval church of Newtown Earley, bearing a faint cross-shaft and knop that survived burial beneath the graveyard. It joined other slabs pulled from the soil during the 1985-7 clean-up, then lay inside the church where darkness and memory could be read in its chipped edge. The stone does not name the dead person, but it preserves the shape of a life marked, forgotten, broken and later remembered.
Associated with the medieval church of Newtown Earley (KK027-012001-). A large number of graveslabs were uncovered during a clean-up of graveyard (KK027-012009-) in 1985-7 (Harte 1987, 408-17). These are currently lying within the interior of the church.
A portion of a graveslab (surviving L 0.62m; Wth 0.54m) with a chamfered edge which appears to be the sinister edge. The incised decoration is very worn. It is illustrated by Harte (1987, 411), with dimensions, but does not have a catalogue number or description. The illustration shows an incised cross-shaft, with knop. Harte (ibid.) suggests that this is possibly part of the broken graveslab (KK027-012023-) which has four double-lined circles terminating the shaft. Stylistically this graveslab dates to the 13th/14th century.
