From: O’Mahony, A. (1987, 16, k) Attached to the wall of one of the chantries of the S transept is a slab (Wth 0.57-0.69; H 2.11m; T 0.19m) with a cross with trefoil ends. The stem of the cross extends the length of the stone. On the left side, parallel with the stem of the cross, is a Norman-French inscription in Lombardic lettering, parts of which are indistinct. It reads: JULIS KE FU LA FEME SIMON GAUNTER GIT ICI DE – DE LA ALME EIT MERCI (Julia who was the wife of Simon Gaunter lies here. May God have mercy on her soul.) Simon Gaunter was elected provost of New Ross at Michaelmas in 1288. This stone may therefore be dated to the late 13th century. Medieval Christian funerary slab, 12th–13th century. Its decorated cross indicates ecclesiastical significance and reflects the artistic styles of the Irish Romanesque period.
