Break a noble body in half and half the name vanishes. What remains is a cross, a knop, and enough letters to promise that someone important once lay beneath the stone.

In St Francis' Abbey (KK019-026101-). Portion of a limestone graveslab (L 0.3m; Wth 0.58m; D 0.21m), though only one edge, which is straight, survives. It has incised decoration, consisting of a cross-shaft with a knop in the form of a double incised circle. There is Lombardic script along the edge which reads: ILL’S DE. This portion of graveslab is described by Bradley (1980, 14, no. 44) as being one of ‘three fragments of an incised fleur-de-lis cross slab with an inscription in incised Lombardic letters: HIC JACET……VILL’S DE….. i.e. Here lies……..Vill’s de …….. Only two of the fragments fit together’. The portion containing the ‘HIC JACET’ inscription may be fragment KK019-026524. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly
