What is recorded here

That is the lowest surviving fragment of a graveslab once set in St Francis' Abbey, Kilkenny. Its cross-shaft ends in a small fleur-de-lis, and the rest has been lost to time, reuse or forgetting. The abbey wall was refaced in the 19th century, probably during the 1868-71 restoration, and the slab was inserted beneath the east window like a memory the builders could not bring themselves to discard.

In St Francis' Abbey (KK019-026101-). The lower portion of a limestone graveslab (L 0.515m; Wth 0.32m) inserted in the inner face of the E wall of the abbey, beneath the E window. The wall was refaced in the 19th-century, probably as part of the restoration work in 1868-71 (Bradley 1980, 14). It is likely to have been decorated with an incised floriated cross, though only the lower portion of the cross-shaft (Wth 0.02m) survives, terminated by a fleur-de-lis. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly
