Graveslab in Gardens (kilkenny City By., St. Mary’s Par.) preserves the top of a broken limestone slab, its right edge lost but a small fleur-de-lis still proud above the damage. It belongs to the world of St Francis' Abbey, where death was marked with care and craft. The missing part may have held a name, a date or a whole life; what remains is enough to show that someone valued the dead enough to shape stone for them.

In St Francis' Abbey (KK019-026101-). A fragment of the upper portion of a limestone graveslab (L 0.26m; Wth 0.52m; D 0.2m). It has a chamfered edge along the top (Wth 0.06m) and sinister side. The dexter side is broken off. The graveslab is decorated with a raised fleur-de-lis cross, only the uppermost fleur-de-lis survives. It is similar in style to another fragment (KK019-026537-) with a raised fleur-de-lis. This fragment is described by Bradley (1980, 14, no. 51). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly

Medieval Christian graveslab, 12th–14th century. Its presence in the former St Francis' Abbey indicates association with monastic burial practices, reflecting the religious history of Kilkenny City.
