Graveslab in Fore

Graveslab

What is recorded here

Two cross inscribed graveslabs (WM004-035028-) are set against the external S wall of the nave of the Abbey (WM004-035010-). Their findplace is not recorded but it is likely from their position that they were found in the cloister and probably represent the burial place of two priors. The first is a 13th or 14th century coffin-shaped sandstone graveslab (dims. H 1.75m; Wth 0.35-0.47m; T 0.18m) outlined by an incised line and decorated with an incised cross patee with elongated stem. The surface of the stone has been deeply scored (Bradley et. al. 1985, 87). Compiled by: Rachel Barrett and Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 21 November 2013
Medieval Christian graveslabs; 11th to 13th century. These slabs are significant for their cross inscriptions, reflecting early Christian funerary traditions in Ireland.
