Graveslab in Clareabbey is a 1679 tomb slab for Samuel Burton and his family, now lying on the ground near the tower inside Clare Abbey. Its letters still claim descent from Longnor in Shropshire, tying a Clare abbey to a distant English house. Burton may have come here with pride, wealth or flight, and the abbey kept his name long after the wall that held it disappeared.

This record is for a slab dated 1679 which originally formed part of a wall monument to Samuel Burton and is now on the ground near the tower within Clare Abbey (CL033-120----). The inscription reads: THIS TOMB WAS ERECTED BY SAMUELL BURTON ESQR FOR HIMSELF AND FAMILY WHO DESCENDED FROM THE HOUSE OF LONGNOR IN ST CHADES PARISH.
