What is recorded here

In 1993, Paddy Healy provided descriptions of three graveslabs (subsequently designated WI005-070011-, WI005-070012- and WI005-070013-) that were found following the collapse of the church tower (WI005-070001-) at Burgage in 1987. WI005-070011-: two fragments of a complete, tapering granite slab (dims. L 1.35m; Wth 0.59-0.70m; T 0.11m) bearing a Latin cross in low relief with a double outline. It had been reused as a doorway lintel in the church tower. Its present location is unknown. (Corlett 2003, 92, 108 Slab 4) The graveslab was subsequently located c. 10m NW of the NW corner of the towerhouse (WI005-070004-). See attached image: • WI005-07011-_1 Photo C. Corlett, 23-8-2022. Medieval Christian graveslab; associated with the remains of an early church. Its significance lies in its potential to provide insights into local burial practices and ecclesiastical history in the area.
