What is recorded here

Graveslab in Athenry is a broken tapering fragment of stone, six-tenths of a metre tall and barely half a metre wide, incised with the shaft of a cross. It crouches in the SE corner of the Dominican church sacristy, waiting for someone to remember whose bones it covered. The missing ends suggest a life as much as a death, a story cut short before it could be read.

This graveslab is now stored in the SE corner of the sacristy of the Dominican church (GA084-001014-). The slab is broken at both ends but the surviving tapering fragment (H 0.6m; Wth across the top 0.49m; base Wth 0.46m; T 0.09m) is incised with the shaft of a cross . Medieval Christian graveslab, 13th–15th century. Its significance lies in its association with the Dominican church in Athenry and as a rare surviving funerary monument from the late medieval period in the region.
