Graveslab in Ardfert

Graveslab

What is recorded here

Nine limestone slabs of undetermined date lie on the ground in the floor of the church of the Franciscan friary in Ardfert. They mark buried bodies whose names and dates have been lost, yet they still divide the sacred floor from the dead beneath it. The friary stands in County Kerry, but the graveslabs belong to whoever fell asleep under Ardfert before the friars built above them.
National Monument No. 358. According to the 'Urban Archaeology Survey of County Kerry' (Bradley, Halpin and King n.d., 49), this is one of 'nine limestone slabs of undetermined date' which lie on the ground in the floor of the church of the Franciscan friary (KE020-047----).
