Graveslab in Abbeyland South

Graveslab

What is recorded here

Graveslab in Abbeyland South holds the body of Ann, who departed this life on the 12th day in 1691. Her name is broken now, but her date remains sharp across the chancel floor. The church still stands around her, keeping the shape of a woman who stopped being young in a world that forgot to stop changing.
This 17th-century rectangular graveslab (L 1.8m; Wth 0.65m) is lying recumbent in the chancel of the church (GA017-005001-). It bears the following inscription, which was recorded by Bradley and Dunne (1992, 70): HERE LYETH TH/ E BODY OF ANN/ N..XODE WHO/ DEPARTED THIS/ LIFE XRE THE 12/ ANNO DNI 1691/ … H THE/ SO…S MVX/ OE…ANO/ D …./ PS Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 24 May 2018
