What is recorded here

Grave Yd is a D-shaped graveyard in County Cork, Ireland, with a straight side measuring about sixty metres and a western projection reaching forty-five metres. It sits inside a possible early ecclesiastical enclosure, eighty metres north of a road, with a broken conglomerate millstone lying just outside its southern gate. The parish church of Kilphelan once occupied the area south of the graveyard’s centre, suggesting this was a lived religious landscape rather than a forgotten marker. Death, worship and daily labour likely shared the same ground, binding the community across generations.
In W half of possible early ecclesiastical enclosure (13903), c. 80m N of road. D-shaped graveyard (straight side c. 60m NNW-SSE; projecting c. 45m to WSW); entrance gate on S side. South of centre is site of parish church of Kilphelan (14437). Broken conglomerate millstone just outside and to E of gate. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
