What is recorded here
Grave Yd. is a forgotten burial ground hidden beneath shoreline scrub on the northern edge of Kilgory Lough, recorded on the 1840 Ordnance Survey map. The survey letters described it as a small deserted place in Kilgory, yet overgrowth has since swallowed the markers and boundaries. People may have stopped visiting because the water rose, the road changed, or the names were lost, leaving the dead buried beneath living brush instead of remembered soil.
In an area of shoreline scrub, on the northern shoreline of Kilgory Lough, c. 60m to E of Kilgory House (CL035-078----). An unenclosed area named ‘Grave Yd.’ on the 1840 edition of the OS 6-inch map. The Ordnance Survey letters cite a small deserted burial place in the townland of Kilgory (OSL, vol. 2, 294). This is not readily visible due to its location within an area of overgrowth.
