Grave Yd.

Graveyard

What is recorded here

Grave Yd. is a small mortared graveyard on the NE shores of Lough Conn in County Mayo, Ireland. Its square grassy area holds old uninscribed stones beside later headstones, while a church stands at the N end with its wall joined to the graveyard boundary. The place sits close to water, road and field, giving it the feel of a long-used local burial ground rather than a grand monument.
Located on a low N–S rise, with a gently slope to E, in an area of damp pasture, on the NE shores of Lough Conn, which lies 120m to W. Roughly square area (35-40m N–S; c. 45m E–W) enclosed by a mortared stone wall, bordered on its W side by a N–S road. The S wall coincides with the S boundary of the townland. There is a gated entrance flanked by stone-built piers towards the S end of the W wall, and a stone-built stile towards the N end of that wall. A church (MA039-064001-) stands at the N end of the graveyard, with its N wall incorporated into the N wall of the graveyard. The interior area is grass-covered. A low, upright uninscribed stone gravemarkers are interspersed between a low density of 19th and 20th century headstones and graveslabs. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 March 2020
