Grave Yd

Graveyard

What is recorded here

Grave Yd is an abandoned oval graveyard in County Cork where a ruined church still stands beside low, unnamed stones. The final marker carries the date 1921, suggesting the community stopped laying people to rest just as the twentieth century accelerated. The gentle south-facing slope and intact stone bank preserve a quiet boundary between the living pasture and the dead, waiting for someone to remember the names the grass has swallowed.
In pasture on gentle S-facing slope. Oval graveyard enclosed by stone-faced bank with ruined church (CO136-001003-) in centre. Low, uninscribed gravemarkers (max. H 0.5m) to S of church (one inscribed with date 1921). No longer in use. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
