What is recorded here
Located towards the bottom of the S-facing slope of Carrigroe Hill, with a small NE-SW stream c. 70m to the S. It is depicted faintly as a small circular feature (diam. c. 20m) within a triangular area (max. dims c. 55m NNE-SSW; c. 35m WNW-ESE) and described as a graveyard only on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It was called 'Teampall Cille Brighde' according to J. O'Donovan writing c. 1840 but was even then almost forgotten (Herity 2014, 75), and it may be the site of the parish church of Kilbride which has no other ecclesiastical site within its bounds. (Ó Crualaoich and Mac Giolla Chomhghaill 2014, 1076)
The long boundary of the triangle at the W was formed by the townland boundary with Bolacreen. No feature is visible at ground level in a clump of grass and scrub. However, it is at the N edge of a D-shaped enclosure (dims c. 46m NNE-SSW; c. 40m WNW-ESE) defined by a fosse (Wth c. 2-3m) that is only visible on Google Earth (14/07/2018) and which is probably an ecclesiastical enclosure (WX016-023001-). This enclosure is cut by a NNE-SSW field bank (L c. 40m) at W and is not visible at the other side of the field bank where there is now a modern house. There are entrance gaps at SE (Wth c. 5m) and S (Wth c. 6.5m), and a rectangular enclosure (WX016-023002-) is attached to the NE. This area (dims c. 40m NW-SE; c. 9m NE-SW) is defined by a fosse that is attached to the fosse of the ecclesiastical enclosure and is only visible as a cropmark. The cropmarks were first reported by Jean Charles Caillere.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
