Grave Yard

Situated on level ground in gently undulating terrain. The only church visible is the present one (built in 1829) which stands outside and to the W of an oval enclosure which surrounds a graveyard (dims. 45m E-W; 30m N-S). The graveyard is raised above the surroundings ground level (H c. 0.8m) and is defined by a slight bank (Wth 2m; max. H 1m) highest at the W. The graveslabs date mainly to the 18th century; the earliest is dated 1712. Among these are a large number of purple slate in the same style as those in Ballymoat (WI024-011001-). Marked 'Church, Grave Yard' on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, although no trace remained of the early church at that time (O'Flanagan 1928, 131).
