Grave Yard

On a natural rise in gently undulating terrain with marshy flood plain of the River Goul to the N and W. Located on a former early medieval monastery probably founded by St Ciarán of Sir in the 6th century (Harbison 1992, 198). The later medieval church (KK008-047001-), aligned E-W with a N chapel is roughly centrally placed within the largely rectangular graveyard (dims. 44m N-S; 60m E-W), the southern portion of which extends westward for c. 22m and includes a round tower (KK008-047004-). The entrance to the graveyard is in the SW leading from the public road. The graveyard is enclosed by a stone wall. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 27 February 2017
