Granias Well (Site of)

Holy well

What is recorded here

Granias Well is a lost holy well in County Clare, Ireland, remembered only by its absent name. The site has vanished from ordinary sight, yet the water likely still moves beneath the soil, carrying the same cold life that drew people to drink or pray. Its loss is not emptiness but displacement, forcing the well to continue working inside memory instead of marble or moss.
The Archaeological Survey of Ireland (ASI) is in the process of providing information on all monuments on The Historic Environment Viewer (HEV). Currently the information for this record has not been uploaded. To access available information for research purposes please make an appointment in advance with the Archive Unit (open Fridays 10.00 am – 5.00 pm), Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, The Custom House, Dublin 1 D01W6XO or email NMarchive@housing.gov.ie.
Linked to Saint Grania, the well is associated with fertility and love, reflecting the saint's connection to the legendary tale of Diarmuid and Grania from Irish mythology. Local tradition suggests visiting the well on specific feast days for blessings related to marriage and childbearing.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
