Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge, built c.1875, with gabled windbreak entrance to front (west) elevation and lean-to return and modern extension to rear elevation. Hipped slate roof with red brick chimneystack with red clay pots. Rusticated limestone walls with dressed granite plinth course, dressed granite eaves course and rock-faced granite quoins with dressed margins. Square-headed window openings with chamfered granite lintels, yellow brick block-and-start reveals and sloping granite sills with bipartite one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Entrance has dressed granite quoins and kneeler stones, square-headed door opening with chamfered granite lintel, chamfered yellow brick block-and-start quoins, timber door and granite step. Associated outbuilding and ornate metal gates in close proximity to west, marking entrance to cemetery.
The graveyard, which opened in 1876, is the largest military cemetery in Ireland. Despite its relative anonymity following Independence, it is of considerable significance, as the final resting place of soldiers from Ireland and Britain who died while on service. This gate lodge is situated immediately to the north of the ornate entrance gates. Though modest in scale, the level of detailing is high, including rock-faced and rusticated granite and yellow brick dressings and the gabled entrance. The landscaped grounds and well-built entrance gates of the cemetery provide an attractive backdrop for the gate lodge.
