Grange Castle

Grange Castle is a four-storey tower house in Grange West, County Kildare, built from hammer-dressed limestone in the late 15th or early 16th century. Its rounded corners, Dutch gable battlements and Jacobean chimney stacks mark it as a rare survivor of medieval defensive architecture. The Tyrrell family held it for over two centuries until State care began in 1988, and a farmhouse now abuts its western wall. Inside, an intramural staircase rises past twin-light windows and a decorated fireplace to a small cap-house, while two garderobe chambers remind visitors that even castle life needed practical relief.
