Gowlane Rock

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Marked 'Gowlane Rock' on the OS maps, this stone lies prostrate in pasture on the summit of a low hill. It measures 2.35m x .65m x .65m, and stood in an upright position up to the early 1970s (local information). The pit in which it stood is still visible, and features in situ packing stones. When upright, the stone had a N-S orientation. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 187. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013
Likely dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, Gowlane Rock may have functioned as a ritual or territorial marker. Local folklore sometimes associates such stones with legendary figures or supernatural events, though specific traditions are not recorded.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
