Gortnakilla Grave Yard

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Gortnakilla Grave Yard is a children's burial ground on a north-facing slope in County Galway, Ireland. Its rectangular boundary still holds a narrow western entrance and rows of set stones marking small graves beneath briars. The place belongs to children who died before records named them, and it keeps their absence visible in the shape of the ground itself.
On a N-facing slope in grassland. This rectangular children's burial ground (19.5m N-S; 18.4m E-W) is defined by a poorly preserved stony bank. There is a stone-faced entrance gap (Wth 1.2m) at W. Concentrated within the NW sector of the interior are numerous lines of set stones indicating graves aligned E-W. The site is overgrown with briars and bushes.
