Goldenbridge Cemetery

Goldenbridge Cemetery opened in 1828 as the first Catholic burial ground in Ireland since the Reformation, breaking centuries of Penal Law exclusion. Its Roman temple chapel rose the next year beside Richmond Barracks, where funeral processions annoyed the 92nd Regiment until the Privy Council restricted new graves. Famine and cholera later filled its rows with the many, while W. T. Cosgrave and his son Liam joined the distinguished few. What began as a defiant claim to dignity became a shared memory, holding both the forgotten dead and the makers of the state.
