Giants Grave

In pasture at the head of a narrow valley opening to the NW. This well-preserved tomb, known as 'The Labby', faces uphill to the SE. It consists of a chamber (L 2.1m; Wth 0.9m at the front, 1.5m at the rear) with sides and back of single stones. The front of the chamber is formed by two portal-stones (H 1.4m) and a doorstone 0.3m lower than them. The structure is covered by a large rectangular roofstone (L 4.8m; Wth 3.4m; T 1.6m) resting on all the orthostats save the more southerly sidestone. There is peat-growth on top of the roofstone. Two raths (SL034-153----; SL034-154----) lie c. 80m to SE. Portal dolmen; dates to the Neolithic period (c. 4000–2500 BCE). Its orientation and preservation provide insight into early megalithic funerary practices in the region.
