George William Russell, who wrote as A.E., was born in Lurgan, County Armagh, Ireland, on 10 April 1867. He became a poet, painter, editor and Irish nationalist, and he helped build co-operative banks across the south and west of Ireland. His family later moved to Dublin, where he worked with Horace Plunkett and befriended W. B. Yeats. Russell died in Bournemouth, England, on 17 July 1935.
