George Travers Maccartney died in 1874, but his tenantry built the fountain because they refused to let him disappear into ordinary history. They called him an indulgent landlord and kind friend, words that still sound suspiciously generous for the age. Water still moves through the stone, carrying the shape of a man remembered more for mercy than power.
In grateful recollection of George Travers Maccartney. esquire DL of Lissanoure who died 29th August 1874. This fountain is erected by a tenantry who deeply deplore his loss to them as an indulgent landlord and a kind friend
