Gateway to former lunatic asylum, erected c.1815, comprising square-profile ashlar limestone piers flanking recent double-leaf vehicular gate. Recess to inside corners of posts showing where original gates fitted. Square-headed opening to north of gate, granite lintel, dressed limestone surround, steel door. Hexagonal recess to wall for bell. Limestone wheel stop to north of gate.

This fine, if somewhat reserved, gateway displays a high level of stonework in its cut limestone piers, attesting to the skill and craftsmanship of stone masons at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It served an important function as the gateway between the former Richmond Lunatic Asylum and the North Union Workhouse, providing a robust boundary between the institutions, as well as conveying an impression of power and security.
