What is recorded here
Detached three-bay single-storey with dormer attic former gate lodge, built c.1820, having gable-fronted porch to front (south) and later single-storey gabled additions to rear (north). Half dormer windows with gablets to front and side (east, west) elevations. Hipped slate roof to main block with timber-clad overhanging eaves, rendered chimneystack, uPVC rainwater goods and timber bargeboards to gablets. Pitched slate roofs with timber bargeboards to porch and rear additions. Rendered walls throughout. Square-headed window openings with rendered sills, having single pointed arch window opening with rendered sill to front (north) elevation half dormer, now blocked. Square-headed door opening to front (south) elevation of porch, now blocked. Rendered boundary walls.
Formerly marking the entrance to Court Macsherry, this gate lodge is an interesting reminder of the scale of the Earl of Shannon's summer estate. Although the main house is now in use as a hotel, and its surrounding lands have been developed, the house, gate lodge, former boat house to the north-east and former school to the south-east are reminders of the wealth and power of the Earls in the past. The gate lodge, sadly disused and in poor repair, retains its historic character and makes a picturesque addition to the streetscape.
