Gallaun (The Pillar)

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallaun stands as a two-metre rectangular pillar on a south-facing Cork slope, aligned slightly east of true north. It is the kind of place where a lost person might have tied a horse, marked a boundary or watched the solstice shadow shorten across grass. The stone does not need a grand claim; it preserves the moment when human attention first touched that exact line of sky and earth.
In pasture on S-facing slope. Rectangular stone aligned NNE-SSW (H 2.25m; 1.6m x 0.3m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
