Gallaun

Standing stone, pair

What is recorded here

Gallaun is a standing stone pair in County Kerry, Ireland, where one upright remains beside a forgotten rath. The surviving stone stands two metres high in open pasture, its southwest corner scratched by hands or tools that never explained themselves. In the 1840s, two high rocks still answered to the name Gallaun, suggesting the second was not lost long before human memory faded.
In pasture, on level ground. An upright stone (dims. 1.05m x 0.75m; H 2m), orientated NE-SW, and rectangular in plan and elevation. Some scratch marks are visible on the corner of the SW face of the stone. In the 1840s 'two high rocks' called gallauns were recorded here (OSNB, Killorglin, no. 1, 5). There is a rath (KE057-038----) c. 190m to the NE. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011
