Gallaun

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallaun is a tall standing stone in Glanleam, County Kerry, trapped inside a much younger earthwork called Cromwell's Fort. The prehistoric upright predates the fort by millennia, creating an odd layered place where ancient stone and later boundary collide. A visitor in 1839 found the stone easy to shake, yet it still stands because someone later braced it with a leaning slab and packing stones.
In pasture overlooking Kealincha River to W. Rectangular stone aligned NE-SW (H 2.8m; 0.9m x 0.4m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
