Gallaun

Upright stone (H 1.45m; 0.35m; 0.16m) within cashel (CO142-070001-), adjacent to entrance. According to Somerville (1931, 10) the stone stood in entrance way but was 'not in original position' and was removed for safety to inside cashel where it now stands. On N face, deeply incised Greek cross (H 0.2m; Wth 0.2m) with expanded terminals. On S face cruder incised cross (L 0.2m; Wth 0.22m). Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with a ringfort or cashel. It may have had a ritual or symbolic function, possibly marking a boundary or serving as a memorial.
