Gallaun

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallaun is a tall standing stone in Glanleam, County Kerry, trapped inside a much younger fort named for Cromwell. The prehistoric upright predates the military earthwork by millennia, creating a strange layer where ancient witness and later conquest share one footprint. A leaning slab now braces its base, perhaps added after Chatterton found it shaky in 1839, proving that even timeless things need occasional human support.
In tillage with commanding views to N, E and S. Irregular stone aligned NW-SE (H 1.3m; 1.2m x 0.75m). Standing stone (CO122-066002-) located 9.5m to E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
