Gallaun

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallaun stands inside Cromwell's Fort on the Iveragh Peninsula, yet the stone is far older than the fort that surrounds it. That much is visible. What is missing is the reason the fort accepted the stone instead of removing it. A tall upright already marked the ground, and later people may have built around it because it was already sacred, already familiar, already impossible to ignore. The fort did not create the meaning of Gallaun. It inherited it.
In pasture on S-facing slope. Sub-rectangular stone aligned NE-SW (H 1.15m; 0.75m x 0.6m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
