What is recorded here
Gallan stands removed on a south-facing Cork pasture slope, its name shifting from Dallaun to Gallaun across map editions before the stone vanished without surface trace. It may have marked a boundary, a burial, or a meeting place where people still walk past the exact spot but no longer see the stone that gave the place its shape.
Marked as single standing stone on 1842, 1904 and 1938 OS 6-inch maps. Named 'Dallaun' on 1842 map and 'Gallaun' on 1904 map. In pasture, on S-facing slope. Removed; no visible surface trace.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
