Gallán

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallan is a fallen standing stone in Cork bogland, marked by score lines along its length. It resists easy description because it is no longer upright, yet the scores suggest human attention rather than random weathering. The bog has taken the stone from sight and map, leaving only a flat shadow where a marker once stood.
Not shown on 1842 and 1903 OS 6-inch maps. In bogland. Fallen stone (L 1.7m; 1m x 0.3m), with some score lines running length of stone. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
