Gallán

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallán is a 2.1m standing stone in County Cork pasture, aligned NNW-SSE beside an unusual stone group. It may have marked a boundary, a burial, a meeting place or a warning, but no human name or date remains attached to it. The stone still stands where it was set, waiting for someone to remember why it was chosen.
In pasture, to SW of anomolous stone group (CO084-05602-). Stone (H 2.1m; 1.5m x 0.7m) is subrectangular in plan, long axis NNW-SSE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
