Gallán

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallan stood six feet high in a Cork pasture until removal around 1984, joining three nearby stones on a sloping field. Broker measured its five-foot girth in 1937, capturing a marker that resisted cartography despite appearing on neither the 1842 nor 1904 maps. Its disappearance erased a visible anchor for the cluster, leaving only the written measurement to prove the stones once crowded the land.
Not shown on 1842 and 1904 OS 6-inch maps. In pasture, on NE-facing slope. One of four monuments (6460; CO048-025003-; 6649) in close proximity to one another. Removed c. 1984. Broker (1937, 30) recorded 'Gallan 6ft high and 5ft in girth'. Probably the same stone. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
