What is recorded here
Galláin is a burial place in County Cork, Ireland. Two upright stones still stand near the northern half of a levelled ground, marking a small square mound that once held the dead. The western stone carries an ogham inscription, proving that this was not a forgotten field but a remembered churchyard where identity and death were written into rock.
In N half of levelled burial ground (9342), within possible early ecclesiastical enclosure (9204). Brash (1879, 164) described nearly-erased, flat, square mound (c. 3.35m x 3.65m and c. 0.45m H) with an upright stone at NE and NW corners and the stump of a third stone at SW corner. He was informed that the SW stone was of similar height to others until smashed. All three stones recorded by Hartnett (1939, 189). NE and NW stones survive, standing 2.9m apart, long axis ENE-WSW. NE stone is 0.4m L, 0.2m T and 1.9m H. NW stone is 0.55m L, 0.25m T and 1.85m H. Ogham inscription on NW stone (7967). (O Nualláin 1988, 251, no. 165).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Neolithic flat-topped long cairn, 19th-century recorded but largely eroded. Its location within a possible early ecclesiastical site suggests later reuse or spiritual continuity in the landscape.
