Fulacht fia in Murrooghtoohy South

On level karst pavement c. 400m E of the seashore, overlooked by improved pasture to the E. A fulacht fia (15.7m E–W; 12.1m N–S; ext. H 1.7m; int. H 1.4m) comprising a horseshoe-shaped mound of burnt stone, the composition of which is visible on its eroded E side. Its W-facing mouth is cut off by a low stony bank (H 0.3m) and a flat internal space (c. 3m x 3m) is likely the location of a trough. A collapsed limekiln (CL001-002002-) abuts the N side of the fulacht fiadh. A stock watering pond fed by a lintelled gryke 10m to the NW and a spring enclosed by a drystone wall 18m NNW indicate possible associated water sources. Robinson’s map (1977) marks a fulacht fia c. 120m to the SSE, however, there is no feature at that location and it likely meant to record this fulacht fia.
